4 Mistakes Every CrossFit Newbie Makes

Did you know that almost 95% of people who start CrossFit, quit in the first 3 months?⠀

Well, that's because they keep making these key mistakes.⠀

1. They don’t focus on form

As CrossFit newbies, our immediate thought is to compete with everyone else at the gym, and if we're not lifting the same weight, we suck. When a CrossFitter starts doing their kipping pull-ups, all we want to do is replicate that because we feel that’s the only way to be accepted in the Box. As you’ll soon find out, that's simply not the case and mostly everyone in the Box is very supportive of you. You have to realize that everyone takes their time to make CrossFit work for them. Even the greats like Rich Froning had to have years of practice to become one of the fittest men alive. One of the ways to do that thought is through practicing proper form. Form first, then add on the weight. Consult with your CrossFit coach or even another CrossFitter that might be a little ahead of you. Whatever it is, make sure you focus on form, because it will only make your life that much easier.⠀

2. They don’t pace themselves

Everyone wants to get the top score for their WOD so they can put it on the leaderboard. But if you exhaust all your energy at the start, you are going to kill yourself for the other half. That's why you always feel fatigued. Not to mention, if you go all out in the first half of your workout, you build up a lot of dangerous lactic acid. Lactic acid leads to a lot of inflammation, resulting in a ton of muscle soreness and damage.

SUNFIRE for sure can help you with that, without a doubt, and it may actually better your CrossFit performance, but it can't work on you unless you work on yourself. Learn to pace yourself. A common method that Rich Froning also uses, is to avoid panic breathing. How to use that is to first do a couple of Metcons, and see how quickly it takes for you to feel out of breath. The next time you do a Metcon, just stop short of that. Compose yourself, not just stop, and then carry on.

3. No consistency

Another big problem for CrossFit Newbies is having this awful mindset that if they only go the Box once a week, they'll get the abs of Rich Froning or Tia-Clair. In order to see results, you need to put in the work. Make sure you go at least 4 times a week when the gym opens up or do a CrossFit WOD at home. The reason being is that with anything new you’re starting, it takes time to adapt. If you’re just learning how to drive a car, will you really pass the driving exam if you just go once a week? No! Repetition is the mother of skill. The more you practice, the more skilled you will get. So keep pumping out those reps and see how your body changes.

4. Drastically changing your diet

Yes, the Paleo diet does work but if this is your first time, it’s best to take it one step at a time. Don't just purge carbs completely. Reduce it little by little each day, and replace it with more protein and carbs. I know from experience that when you start cutting down the amount of your carbs significantly, you start to lose a ton of energy. Like you’ll be barely able to make it through a WOD or a Metcon. It’s the worst. And then when you can’t finish, you’ll have to step aside in the CrossFit class because you can’t take the embarrassment of not keeping up with everyone else.
