Nowadays, you’re finding a lot harder to fight for the belief that anyone can be an athlete.
Specifically, the belief that anyone can be one.
A lot of these body positivity groups come in and say “NO! Being slim & trim is not what makes you fit. You have to love me”
And being slim is not all what it takes to be fit
But being slim & trim comes through hard freaking work---if that's what you choose.
And that’s one of the core components of being an athlete
But after going through a lot of research and doing some personal research by talking to unlikely athletes in my bubble, I found 3 more ways that exemplify what an athlete really is.
1. Be a teammate. Now this doesn’t have to be strictly relegated to sports teams but if you’re in one of your CrossFit classes, don’t just stand there while everyone else is cheering on for the other person. That’s kind of a dick move. Support your fellow members and they’ll support you back. I see so many people just focused on their own lifts, their own WODs. But come on now. If you really want to grow, you got to rely on other people to give you guidance. That way they’ll help you too.
2.Be dedicated. Every time you go to a morning CrossFit class, that’s dedication. Every time you do just one more burpee, that’s dedication. Every time you attempt to do an Rx even though you’re just a newbie that’s dedication. If you got that drive in you--that unquenchable drive to succeed, then nothing is going to stop you. And that’s what being an athlete is all about
3. The last thing that all athletes have in common is something you can’t find on the stats chart. It’s loving every moment of the game. There’s a reason why you go to all those CrossFit classes, and I can tell you right now, it’s not to get your ass kicked. It’s because you secretly love it. You love the empowerment you feel when you get to level up each and every workout. It excites you and it fuels you. Other people can’t for the life of you understand why, but you know they never will. So you keep grinding and you keep hustling until you get a victory.
