The Detox: A Gem of a Supplement

Picture this for a second. You've just been binging on junk food for the past 2 days. You feel sick & terrible, but you know what's looking worse? Your body.

Specifically, what's going on inside of it.

All that garbage carries a lot of chemicals, and those leave a lot of bad stuff lingering in your body. Hence, you feel more sick & more tired.

"Well, how the hell do I fix it Sean?"

There are so many ways you can do it. Probably the first one that pops into people's heads is through nutrition. Clean up your eating habits, cut down on the refined sugars, and start eating rabbit food. Makes complete & logical sense, and it works too!

But here's the thing with that method. You're only covering up those toxins with more food, which you hope will work itself out in the end. I will show you why you need more than food to combat those toxins, and why a Detox supplement is the key.

1. Eliminates the poison quickly (aka 'bad' chemicals from the body)

Don't get me wrong, having a solid nutrition plan coupled with a whole foods detox program will always be the best way to go. Mainly because it provides long term health that is sustainable. But coming back to our junk food story, would you really want to wait months to see change in your health? Especially if that means letting that junk food linger in there?

Probably not, and that's my main gripe with detoxing with whole foods. There is no doubt that it'll work out in the end, but it'll take some time to rewire your diet.

A detox supplement on the other hand is made for a short term cleanse. It provides you with that rejuvenated feeling quickly, but that also means it's easier to fall back on poor eating habits.

My advice is combining both of these, the supplements and the detox nutrition plan, so you'll see short term effects as well as long term. Win-win situation!

2. Helps to curb cravings & controls food impulses

Something that detoxes are known for is their ability to curb cravings & control your urge to go after that donut. How does it do this? I'll explain to you in just a bit but there is a lot of science-y stuff involved. You have been warned.

When detoxes enter your body, it does this nifty thing of cleaning your blood so it removes things like sugar imbalances, saturated fats, out-of-control salt levels, and high acidity. This in turn helps to improved blood circulation which is how it curbs your cravings. Bad blood circulation is responsible for tiredness, dizziness, unbalanced heartbeats among a host of other health problems. Being perpetually tired all the time makes you less likely to make logical & healthy decisions, hence you start eating garbage.

But if you were to fix it, your body becomes like a brand new car. Constantly pumping & circulating nutrients to different parts of the body to make you less tired and more prone to making good decisions. So instead of reaching for that donut, you just might reach for that kale & spinach shake. That's a strong maybe.

3. Micronutrients

I discussed a lot about this in my post about BCAAs, which you can check it out here. For those of you who want a quick catch-up, micronutrients are vitamin B's(from 1-12), A's, D's, E's and K's, along with Lutein and other carotenoids. They make up all the essential nutrients that the body needs albeit in small doses respectively. If one does not have any of these nutrients on a constant basis, it could lead to anemia, vitamin deficiencies and thyroid conditions. With a detox however, it helps to fix that. Almost all detoxes carry some micronutrients that could really benefit you for the long run. A popular one is magnesium and the best ones usually have a mix of natural ingredients and micronutrients like Acai berry with magnesium. Micronutrients may not seem like much, but it'll go a long way.

4. Manage Stress

Another benefit of detoxes that you probably didn't know about is it's ability to manage your stress. No it can't help with that roach of a boss of yours, but it can definitely help to bring your cortisol levels down. Cortisol, for all you non-science nerds out there, is the hormone responsible for controlling our stress levels. However, when this gets too high, that's when there's a problem as it affects a lot of organs, specifically the liver. How do you fix this? You have to pick foods and supplements that help to balance high sugar levels, which in turn brings down your cortisol levels. A lot of detox supplements use black walnut hull powder as it is known to lower blood sugar levels.

Going through a detox, whether through nutrition alone, supplements, or both, is not only great, but also necessary & essential to maintaining your body to perform it's best potential. By going through regular detoxes, you not only feel cleaner, you feel more energized, rejuvenated and ready to take on whatever life throws at you.
