Is it just a word we made up? Maybe.
In reality though, creating fitness that lasts is nothing new.
Say you've already reached that ideal lean body that you've wanted for so long. You're feeling happy and comfortable with how you look. And isn't that what we all want?
But the bodybuilding crowd and the gym rats beg to differ. They believe that you should never stop growing. You can't even miss a day!
"How dare you skip the gym for even a day?? Every day skipped, means another day wasted!"
The problem with that though, is it's not feasible for the long run.
Lifting heavy 7 days a week for the rest of your life will result in your joints feeling like they've been turned to mush.
Eating like a bodybuilder for the rest of your life, where you consume so many calories/day, will only result in a ton of other issues. Kidney problems, stomach cramps, liver issues and probably the worst of them all, you'll end up getting really fat!
Weight loss is huge right now, but what if you actually like the weight you're at? (I know, shocking)
Continuing to train for fat/weight loss & dieting that way will only make you more fatigued and stressed because you're never satisfied with how you look, which can lead to depression amongst a host of other problems.
God forbid you eat that piece of red velvet cake you've been craving, and not feel like complete shit.
And that's why this blog was made. To help you come to the understanding that building huge muscle or losing a shit ton of weight are not the only 2 fitness options available. There's this third one, maintenance fitness, which trumps the rest by a landslide.
Maintenance fitness is a big 'screw you' to the fitness industry. You don't have to have a six-pack with veins protruding out of your biceps to be the epitome of health. You don't have to have a ' Instagram body' with a big booty and slim waist to qualify for a high level of fitness. You have a life to attend to with work, family, etc. You don't have time to be in the gym 6 days a week, 6 hours a day. You want to live a life that allows you to be flexible with your diet, your workouts, and everything in between. Something that'll let you do the things you love and eat the things that you desire, but keep the weight off and the muscle on for a longer period of time.
Something else that is HUGELY important to fitness, but often gets overlooked by us, is supplements. For some of you, I just said this big scary thing but supplements have been proven to be really beneficial. You might not necessarily need what these bodybuilders are using, but the protein powder, the pre-workout, the energy booster and the occasional fat burner should suffice. These are just the basics in assisting you get to your own personal health goals. The pre-workout and energy booster especially are something that I love mostly because right after work I just drink or take a cap, and it gets me going throughout the evening without having to take long naps.
This way of sustainable fitness is so much better than traditional fitness because it's REAL. It takes into account that you do have a life, and can't afford to be at the gym for hours on end. It caters to your own personal goals instead of what some bodybuilder has planned out for you. Some days you don't feel like going to the gym. Some days you just feel like eating five layer nachos. With this lifestyle, you can skip the gym once in awhile and not beat yourself about it. Moreover, this is a mindset. Is it worth going through all that stress of getting that picture-perfect magazine cover body if it means your mental health, and your own self-image deteriorates? I've been through this position before guys, and trust me it's not a place where you want to be.
I used to be obsessed with getting that much desired Arnold Schwarzenegger physique because to me that was the pinnacle of health. I used to put my body through a rigorous training routine where I literally couldn't move for days. I used to go on extreme diets either to put on mass or lean down. Both ended me up in a worse state than before. I was severely depressed when the results were not showing, and I used to resent myself for it.
As a result, I would work even harder at the gym, constantly pushing myself to the brink of physical exhaustion. But because of this, I was constantly tired and my work suffered for it. That's when I realized taking it easy and embracing the fun of fitness is the ONLY way to truly be healthy and happy.
I love fitness to maintain, and hopefully, you already have or will come to love it just as much as I do.
